continental crust units crop out in The Mesa de Cocodite, central Paraguaná Peninsula,
Northwestern Venezuela, including a newly mapped quartz-feldspar gneiss that
intruded (or is intruded by?) the El Amparo Pluton, a major low-graded
metamorphic unit of Permian age. It is unconformably overlying by Late Jurassic
phyllites of the Pueblo Nuevo Formation. All these units are cross-cut by
narrow dykes. This contribution focuses on the petrography and LA-ICP-MS U-Pb

quartz-feldspar gneiss consists of albite (average 57%), bluish and smoked
quartz (40%), muscovite-chlorite (2%), epidote (1%) and zircon (1%). The enclosing
El Amparo Pluton is typically a coarse-grained and thick-banded
metagranodiorite, containing andesine (35%), quartz (28%), hornblende (12%),
epidote (10%), K-feldspar (7%), biotite (6%), chlorite (1%), titanite (1%) and
zircon (1%). The younger dykes consist of fine-grained, porphyritic
hornblende diorites that contain numerous hornblende phenocrysts. The main
minerals are andesine (65%), hornblende (25%), quartz (5%), and chlorite (5%).
Accessory minerals include zircon, epidote and opaques. A felsic gneiss
xenolith collected from the dykes showed a modal composition of quartz (50%), K-feldspar

<span lang="EN-US">Zircon
population in the quartz-feldspar gneiss displays a discordia trend, ranging in
age from 1050-750 Ma but mostly around 950-900 Ma, which may represent a peak
high-grade metamorphism in the area. The El Amparo Pluton provides a concordant
Permian age (271.3±6.5 Ma), which is comparable with previous reported U-Pb ages
in titanite. Because the porphyry dykes cross-cut all the units in the area, they
should be post-Late Jurassic in Age; however, all dated zircons from the dykes
are in the range of 1200-750 Ma. The absence of younger ages can be attributed to
either formation during a relatively low temperature magmatic event, which
generated very narrow younger zircon rims only and thus undetectable with the
technique used, or a completely lack of newly generated outer zones due to
quick cooling. The emplacement age for the dykes may be early Cenozoic, as for
similar basement rocks from the Gulf of Venezuela and the Guajira Peninsula.</span></div>

felsic-gneiss xenolith enclosed in the dykes contains inherited Proterozoic
zircons (1200-950 Ma) with rims of Permian age (270.2±4.1 Ma). Thus, the
inherited older ages detected in the feldspar-gneiss unit, the later dykes, and
the xenolith indicate the occurrence of Grenvillian crust in Northwestern South
America. The Permian ages obtained in the Paraguaná Peninsula are similar to ages
reported for the Mérida Andes, Santa Marta Massif, Perijá Range, Orchila
Island, northern part of the Maracaibo Basin (Toas Island), northwestern Falcon
Basin. Therefore, the Permian magmatic event may have been related to an active
margin during the construction of Pangaea, caused by the subduction of oceanic
crust under the northwestern corner of South America.</span></div>

<b><span lang="ES" style="font-size: 9pt;">Resumen</span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 9.0pt;">
debido a un fenómeno de <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">slab break-off</i>
mesozoicas y sedimentos terciarios. </span></div>

<b><span lang="ES" style="font-size: 9pt;">Introducción</span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 9.0pt;">
Pecaya (Oligoceno medio a Mioceno temprano) (e.g.: <span style="font-variant: small-caps;">Kugler</span> 1929, <span style="font-variant: small-caps;">Brueren</span>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 9.0pt;">
Posteriormente <span style="font-variant: small-caps;">Fournier</span> <i>et al. </i>(2002) y <span style="font-variant: small-caps;">Camposano</span> <i>et al. </i>(2005) estudian
Chichiriviche.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 9.0pt;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 9.0pt;">
<span lang="ES" style="font-size: 9pt;">Las cinco muestran estudiadas (Tabla 1) corresponden a
mayores cambios. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 9.0pt;">
</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 9.0pt;">

</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span lang="ES" style="font-size: 9pt;">Conclusiones</span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 9.0pt;">
Formación Capadare (<span style="font-variant: small-caps;">Urbani</span>
& <span style="font-variant: small-caps;">Mendi </span>2011).
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none; text-indent: 9.0pt;">
Mioceno medio (A<span style="font-variant: small-caps;">udemard</span> 1993).
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none; text-indent: 9.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none; text-indent: 9.0pt;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span lang="ES" style="font-size: 9pt;">Primera
Etapa</span></i></b><span lang="ES" style="font-size: 9pt;">: (Paleoceno - Eoceno
Medio).
Terreno Falconia (<span style="font-variant: small-caps;">Grande </span>2011),
Eoceno. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none; text-indent: 9.0pt;">
fracturamiento (<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">slab break-off</i>) de un
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 9.0pt;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span lang="ES" style="font-size: 9pt;">Segunda etapa</span></i></b><span lang="ES" style="font-size: 9pt;"> (Oligoceno medio - Mioceno temprano).
2009)</span></div>

This new finding represents a breakthrough not only in terms of crustal growth
processes, but also in providing new lines of evidence to initiate a review of
the geodynamic models for the evolution of northern South
America. This allochthonous block named hereby as the Falconia
Terrane (FT) and c</span><span lang="EN-US">onsist of a sequence of high-grade
metamorphic rocks of dolomitic marble, calc-silicate rock, meta-anorthosite, felsic,
mafic and ultramafic granulite, metapelite, garnet amphibolite and amphibolite.
New LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon dating in metapelites and granulites from the FT showed
upper-intercept ages at about 1.3 - 1.2 Ga.
interpreted as the crystallization age of inherited zircons and a concordant
age <i>ca</i>. 0.92 Ga which may document
the younger granulitic metamorphic event. In addition, 40Ar-39Ar
ages from hornblende crystals in amphibolites, phlogopite crystals present in
the dolomitic marble, and biotite crystals in the felsic granulite shows
variable behavior. The hornblende preserves older apparent 40Ar-39Ar
ages around 0.93 Ga, which can be related to younger metamorphic event, whereas
phlogopite and biotite spectra do not define plateau ages. The apparent ages of
the incremental steps vary between 837 Ma and 785 Ma, respectively. Igneous rock
samples collected from well cores and outcrops around the Maracaibo Basin yielded
Grenvillian-type Sm-Nd depleted mantle model ages (TDM) of 1.3 – 1.2
Ga. They probably represent juvenile crustal material rather than evolved
continental crustal fragments. This terrane exhibits a complex crustal history,
and the radiometric ages here presented suggest that they probably formed part
of a single Western South America terrane located
initially in the northwestern margin of the Amazonian Craton during the Neoproterozoic.
The geodynamic evolution envisioned for the FT involved an accordion-type of
tectonics in which this terrain separated the South America craton during the
break-up Gondwana and later docked against the South America margin during the
Late Cretaceous – Middle Eocene collision of the Caribbean
plate.</span></span></div>

(Fig. 1B).

<b>Abstract</b><br />
</div></div><div style="text-align: justify;">A multi-event tectonic episode that affected the Caribbean and South American plate boundaries as well as Cenozoic oil generation is based on new structural and geochemical data from the western Falcon Basin, Venezuela. It involves Late Cretaceous to Middle Eocene emplacement of the Lara Nappes followed by Late Eocene to Early Miocene tectonic collapse and graben formation, Middle Miocene inversion and out of sequence thrusting. Oil-source rock correlation of seeps in the northern part of the basin suggests a Cenozoic siliciclastic source rock deposited under suboxic to anoxic conditions. Potential Cenozoic source rocks and Late Cretaceous La Luna Formation were used to evaluate the generation conditions using one- and two-dimensional thermal modelling. A heat flow of c. 190 mW m22 was reached during the Oligocene–Early Miocene in the central part of the basin. As a result the Cretaceous source rock is overmature, while the primary Cenozoic source rocks are in the oil window. The thermal modelling also suggests that hydrocarbon accumulations are mainly located on the flanks of the graben, with small amounts possible in the centre, due to erosion during basin inversion. This modelling is highly consistent with the proposed polyphase tectonic model.<br />
